![]() ![]() Joker premiered at the 76th Venice International Film Festival on August 31, 2019, where it won the Golden Lion and was theatrically released in the United States on October 4, 2019. Joker is the first live-action theatrical Batman film to receive an R rating from the Motion Picture Association. Principal photography took place in New York City, Jersey City and Newark, from September to December 2018. Phoenix became attached in February 2018 and was cast that July, while the majority of the cast signed on by August. The film loosely adapts plot elements from Batman: The Killing Joke (1988), but Phillips and Silver otherwise did not look to specific comics for inspiration. The two were inspired by 1970s character studies and the films of Martin Scorsese, particularly Taxi Driver (1976) and The King of Comedy (1982), who was initially attached to the project as a producer. Phillips conceived Joker in 2016 and wrote the script with Silver throughout 2017. Pictures and DC Films in association with Village Roadshow Pictures, Bron Creative and Joint Effort. Pictures, Joker was produced by Warner Bros. Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz and Frances Conroy appear in supporting roles. Set in 1981, it follows Arthur Fleck, a failed clown and aspiring stand-up comic whose descent into mental illness and nihilism inspires a violent countercultural revolution against the prosperous in a decaying Gotham City. The film, based on DC Comics characters, stars Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker and serves as a standalone origin story for the character. We just had two cameras in there and let it happen, which became a major part of how we did a lot of things.Joker is a 2019 American neo-noir psychological thriller film directed by Todd Phillips, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Scott Silver. All we knew was that he’d fire the gun into the wall at some point, but we never planned when or knew that he’d stand and have that conversation with himself and begin dancing. “Like when he’s playing with the gun and fires it into the wall. “Joaquin created that whole dance and, after the success of that scene, we started creating more moments like that,” Sher said. The moment Arthur accidentally fires a gun in his mother’s apartment was also improvised. Sher told /Film the dance itself was improvised on the spot. The original scene was supposed to find Arthur talking to himself in the bathroom mirror in disbelief over his actions, but Phillips and Phoenix scrapped it in favor of having Arthur process his violent act through dance. Phillips has already revealed that the infamous bathroom scene, in which Arthur begins to dance while coping with his first acts of murder, was improvised on the day of filming. The refrigerator moment was hardly the only time Phoenix used improv to make a “Joker” scene work. Joaquin Phoenix Let Out the ‘Most Intense, Guttural’ Scream to ‘Humiliate’ Himself Before ‘Beau Is Afraid’ Take I remember thinking, ‘What is he doing? Did he just crawl in the fridge?’ It was as fun and weird for us to watch it, too.” Again, we lit it so he could go anywhere, and the first and only time he did it, we were mesmerized. We set up two camera positions, and Joaquin just thought about what he would do if he was a massive insomniac. “When he climbed in the refrigerator, we had no idea he was going to do that. ![]() “While some scenes were very planned out, like when he’s in the phonebooth or walking up the stairs, others had no plan at all,” Sher said. Phoenix’s refrigerator move was an improvisation that no one on the crew knew until the moment happened during filming, “Joker” cinematographer Lawrence Sher reveals in a new interview with /Film. Arthur fits himself into the fridge and shuts the door behind him, as director Todd Phillips holds the shot for a couple extra seconds to show Arthur will remain inside the tight space for awhile. One of the more baffling moments in “ Joker” finds Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck coping with his violent descent into the eponymous villain by clearing out the contents of his refrigerator so that he can fit inside it. ![]()
